THE CARVED WOODEN PORTRAIT

 Here is the carved wooden portrait that my great uncle in the lumber business carved.   I think it was Louis P. (but could it be Julius? Both were Grandpa Dave's brothers.)

It is a likeness of my Grandpa Dave and Granny Ida.

In March, 2022, I sent it along with other carvings of his to to my cousin David P. who is the one I most trust to take good care of it!

THE SNIFTERS AND COCK ROBIN

 This is what I sent to David and Catalina in March, 2022.

The Cock Robin plate -- a child's plate with the poem and alphabet --was a gift from David's mother, Aunt Fran.  When she and Uncle Al were first married during WWII they lived and worked in Baltimore and used to love to go "antiquing."   I always loved this little child's plate at their home, and when they no longer lived there Fran gave it to me.

The wooden dogs (or maybe they are wolves?) were carved by my great uncle Julius (or was it Louis?) -- the one in the lumber business.

He made many lovely carvings and as of March 22 I am still looking for the last one, the little chain.

The little dogs (or wolves?) I used to arrange one in front of the other, whereupon Uncle Al named them "The Snifters!"   I'm not sure my mother approved of this but I thought it was really funny and that's what I call them too!

I already sent David and Catalina The Snifters, and also the wooden carved portrait of our grandparents, David and Ida.  I'll post the photo they sent me here as well.

And now they also have the child's "Cock Robin" plate, as seen here.  t

I am still looking for the carved wooden chain -- when I find it I'll take a picture to post here and then send it to David and Catalina as well.

Lyrics to Ukraine’s National Anthem in English:

The glory and freedom of Ukraine has not yet perished
Luck will still smile on us brother-Ukrainians.
Our enemies will die, as the dew does in the sunshine,
and we, too, brothers, we'll live happily in our land.

We’ll not spare either our souls or bodies to get freedom
and we’ll prove that we brothers are of Kozak kin.

Lyrics to Ukraine’s National Anthem in Ukrainian Alphabet:

Ще не вмерла України і слава, і воля,
Ще нам, браття молодії, усміхнеться доля.
Згинуть наші воріженьки, як роса на сонці.
Запануєм і ми, браття, у своїй сторонці.

Душу й тіло ми положим за нашу свободу,
І покажем, що ми, браття, козацького роду.

Lyrics to Ukraine's National Anthem in Latin Alphabet:
Shche ne vmerla Ukrayiny, ni slava, ni volya,
Shche nam, brattya-ukrayintsi, usmikhnet’sya dolya.
Zginut’ nashi vorizhen’ki, yak rosa na sontsi,
Zazhivemo i mi, brattya, u svoyiy storontsi.

Dushu y tilo mi polozhim za nashu svobodu
I pokazhem, shcho mi, brattya, kozats’kogo rodu.

FROM TENNYSON'S POEM: THE DEATH OF ARTHUR

NB: I have also posted about this somewhat differently at: https://joansdeathpoems.blogspot.com

The following is from:

https://www.poetrynook.com/poem/and-slowly-answered-arthur-barge

"And slowly answered Arthur from the barge... ."

And slowly answered Arthur from the barge:
The old order changeth, yielding place to new,
And God fulfils Himself in many ways,
Lest one good custom should corrupt the world.
Comfort thyself: what comfort is in me?
I have lived my life, and that which I have done
May He within Himself make pure! but thou,
If thou shouldst never see my face again,
Pray for my soul. More things are wrought by prayer
Than this world dreams of. Wherefore, let thy voice
Rise like a fountain for me night and day.
For what are men better than sheep or goats
That nourish a blind life within the brain,
If, knowing God, they lift not hands of prayer
Both for themselves and those who call them friend?
For so the whole round earth is every way
Bound by gold chains about the feet of God.
But now farewell. I am going a long way
With these thou seëst—if indeed I go
(For all my mind is clouded with a doubt)—
To the island-valley of Avilion;
Where falls not hail, or rain, or any snow,
Nor ever wind blows loudly; but it lies
Deep-meadowed, happy, fair with orchard-lawns
And bowery hollows crowned with summer sea,
Where I will heal me of my grievous wound.’
So said he, and the barge with oar and sail
Moved from the brink, like some full-breasted swan
That, fluting a wild carol ere her death,
Ruffles her pure cold plume, and takes the flood
With swarthy webs. Long stood Sir Bedivere
Revolving many memories, till the hull
Looked one black dot against the verge of dawn,
And on the mere the wailing died away.

SPANISH IS THE LOVING TONGUE

ORIGINAL LYRICS BY CHARLES BADGER CLARK, JR.

Originally published in Charles Badger Clark, Sun and Saddle Leather, Boston, 1915; later included in N. Howard Thorp, Songs of the Cowboys, Boston, 1921. Music: unknown composer; most commonly used melody from the singing of Richard Dyer-Bennett (learned from Sam Eskin), transcribed in The People's Songs Bulletin (Vol. 3, No. 11).

Spanish is the loving tongue,
Soft as music, light as spray:
'Twas a girl I learned it from,
Living down Sonora way.
I don't look much like a lover,
Yet I say her love words over,
Often when I'm all alone --
"Mi amor, mi corazón."

Nights when she knew where I'd ride
She would listen for my spurs,
Fling the big door open wide,
Raise them laughin' eyes of hers;
And my heart would nigh stop beating
When I heard her tender greeting,
Whispered soft for me alone --
"Mi amor, mi corazón."

Moonlight in the patio,
Old Senora nodding near,
Me and Juana talking low
So the Madre couldn't hear;
How those hours would go a-flyin'!
And too soon I'd hear her sighin'
In her little sorry tone --
"Adios, mi corazón!"

But one time I had to fly
For a foolish gamblin' fight,
And we said a swift goodbye
In that black unlucky night.
When I'd loosed her arms from clingin'
With her words the hoofs kept ringin'
As I galloped north alone --
"Adios, mi corazón!"

Never seen her since that night --
I can't cross the Line, you know.
She was "Mex" and I was white;
Like as not it's better so.
Yet I've always sort of missed her
Since that last wild night I kissed her;
Left her heart and lost my own --
"Adios, mi corazón!"

As recorded by Dylan, Nashville, TN, Apr 24, 1969 (released on "Dylan");

transcribed by Manfred Helfert.

Broke her heart, lost my own,
"Adios, mi corazón!"

Spanish is the loving tongue,
Soft as music, light as spray:
'Twas a girl I learned it from,
Living down Sonora way.
Well, I don't look much like a lover,
Still I say her love words over,
Mostly when I'm all alone --
"Mi amor, mi corazón."

Haven't seen her since that night --
I can't cross the line, you know.
They want me for a gamblin' fight;
Like as not it's better so.
Still I always kind of missed her
Since that last sad night I kissed her;
Broke her heart, lost my own --
"Adios, mi corazón!"
Broke her heart, lost my own --
"Adios, mi corazón!"

"Adios, mi corazón!"
